Isekai or “another world” defined in the Urban Dictionary is a genre that mainly consists of one or multiple main characters getting transported into another world. This transportation can either be through summoning or reincarnation and almost always includes some sort of fantasy or magic.
For anime it is common to have tv shows, like the three recommended below, to start off with a season and then it is followed by a movie or two if it was popular. In these recommendations That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime is the only tv show with a movie.
Here are three popular isekai anime for the current 2019-2020 season:
That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime Seasons: 2
This is my number ONE favorite Isekai of all time. Starting in October of 2018, it is currently 25 episodes running at about 24 minutes each. This show includes some fighting but I wouldn’t say they are extremely graphic.
This show is based upon our main character Satoru Mikami who was living a boring and repetitive lifestyle until he died suddenly while on a day off with his coworker. When he awoke he finds himself in a cave as a completely different species, the slime. He goes through the cave advancing his skills and befriends a dragon. After exiting the cave, he stumbles upon a goblin village and that is where he starts his intense journey to unify all species.
No Game No Life Seasons: 1
Starting in April 2014 this Isekai also is labeled comedy, game, adventure, ecchi, and supernatural. Ecchi is described as subtle naughty behavior, not like full on hentai which includes sexual behavior, but like panty shots, boobs, and bathhouses.
Two introverted siblings, Sora and Shiro, connected at the hip hide behind their screens and rule over the gaming world known as Blank because they have no username. One day they are challenged to a game of chess by an unknown person, after a long fight they finally one. They are then sucked into a world by a god, Tet, who created a world of game. Within this world there are ten pledges:
- All murder, war, and robbery is forbidden in this world.
- All conflict in this world will be resolved through games.
- In games, each player will bet something that they agree is of equal value.
- As long as it doesn’t violate pledge three, anything may be bet, and any game may be played.
- The challenged party has the right to decide the rules of the game.
- Any bets made in accordance with the pledges must be upheld.
- Conflicts between groups will be conducted by designated representatives with absolute authority.
- Being caught cheating during a game is grounds for an instant loss.
- In the name of god, the previous rules may never be changed.
- Let’s all have fun and play together!
They immediately fit in and even jump into the game to find a new ruler for Imanity, or humanity. They use their overwhelming skills to take over the world in order to challenge god.
Re: Zero Seasons: 2
Starting in April 2016, This action Isekai is probably one of the most gruesome. A lot of blood and violence starts right of the bat and it gets more intense the further in you go.
Subaru, after leaving a convenience store gets transported into a medieval, fantasy world. He thinks he is apart of some big plot but ends up getting pushed around he meets a half elf who got her insignia stolen and in the middle of trying to retrieve it, he dies. He wakes up, or in better terms becomes conscious, in front of the first interaction he had in the world, a fruit street vendor. Slowly he realizes he reverses time by dying. With no knowledge on how to return home or who summoned him he starts a new adventurous life in this world.
